Writing
Intent
At Park Primary School, writing is central to our broad and balanced curriculum. We aim for every child, regardless of background or need, to become a confident, competent writer who understands and applies the conventions of Standard English appropriately. Our curriculum ensures pupils can write effectively for a range of audiences and purposes, preparing them for secondary education and future life.
We draw upon the Michael Tidd approach alongside elements of Jane Considine’s methodology to immerse pupils in high-quality models and meaningful contexts. Children explore the purpose, structure and impact of different text types and develop a secure understanding of spelling, grammar and editing. Learning builds progressively on prior knowledge so that pupils leave Park with a deep understanding of how to construct purposeful and engaging texts independently.
Implementation
In EYFS and Year 1, children develop early composition skills through Drawing Club and Curious Quests, promoting creativity and enjoyment. From Year 2 onwards, teaching is structured around the Michael Tidd approach, with clear links to text purposes: to inform, persuade, discuss and entertain. Jane Considine’s “lenses” are used to enhance planning and deepen understanding.
Writing is taught daily through high-quality English lessons, supported by discrete SPaG and spelling sessions. Planning is informed by the National Curriculum and EYFS Framework and draws on novels, poetry, film and real-life events. Oracy is embedded through structured talk and questioning.
Teachers model the writing process explicitly, demonstrating planning, drafting, editing and refining. Children are given regular opportunities to practise, edit and improve their work. Spelling is taught through Grammasaurus, focusing on etymology and word structure. Accurate spelling and grammar are expected across all subjects.
Impact
Monitoring shows that writing at Park is taught systematically and progressively. Pupils demonstrate strong stamina, confidence and pride in their work. Writing across the curriculum reflects high standards and clear purpose.
Children articulate their learning effectively and understand how to improve their writing. Progress is tracked using school progression statements and exemplars, with regular feedback to pupils and parents. Ongoing leadership monitoring and professional development ensure consistently high standards and continued improvement.
